Hong Kong, October 16: No fewer than 30 Asian Tour champions including seven Order of Merit winners will step up to the tee when the UBS Hong Kong Open begins at the Hong Kong Golf Club next week.
Heavyweights from the region’s premier Tour including India’s Anirban Lahiri, defending champion Scott Hend as well as Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, Thaworn Wiratchant, India’s Jeev Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa, Arjun Atwal, China’s Liang Wen-chong and Korean-American David Lipsky will all feature in the star-studded line-up at the US$2 million championship which takes place from October 22 to 25.
Dustin Johnson of the United States and England’s Justin Rose, both ranked in the world’s top-10, will also headline the international field alongside Ryder Cup stars Victor Dubuisson of France, Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland and American Patrick Reed.161015_VMO_Anirban Lahiri (IND) 21
Four-time Hong Kong Open champion and fan favourite Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain has also confirmed his appearance at the Hong Kong showepiece.
Fireworks are expected to be ignited when the stars battle head-to-head on the fairways of the Hong Kong Golf Club.
Hend has already laid down the marker with his intentions to defend his title while Lahiri has fired an ominous warning to his rivals with his impressive form this season.
“It was an amazing win in Hong Kong last year and I’m hoping to do it all over again.
“I’ve always enjoyed coming back to Hong Kong as the atmosphere at the UBS Hong Kong Open is great. It’s one of the best tournaments on Tour and has a great history behind it,” said Hend, a six-time Asian Tour winner who has always finished inside the top-five on the Order of Merit in 2014, 2013, 2009 and 2007.
Lahiri hopes his rich vein of form will see him notch his first win at the UBS Hong Kong Open next week.
The current Order of Merit leader has won twice on the Asian Tour this season.
He has also made his impact on the international stage with a top-five finish at the PGA Championship and became the first Indian to feature in The Presidents Cup last week.
“This is an important stretch with a good run of events coming up. There are lots of world ranking points at stake and it’ll be a good opportunity for me to cement my lead at the top of the Order of Merit.
“I’m hoping for that big ‘W’ in Hong Kong. I’ve struggled on the course early on in my career but it’s different now. I’ve improved,” said the 28-year-old Indian.
The return of UBS as title sponsor for the first time since 2012 has seen the prize purse for the tournament increase to US$2 million in 2015 from US$1.3 million last year. The event is also supported by the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Mega Events Fund and sanctioned by the Asian Tour, European Tour and Hong Kong Golf Association.161015_VMO_Liang Wen-chong (CHN) 03
With the funding support from the Mega Events Fund, the “UBS Hong Kong Open” has successfully secured the participation of a number of world’s leading golf players to play in this mega event. Their presence will significantly boost the profile of the tournament as a major sporting event. The star names will not only support the promotion of this event, but will also help promote Hong Kong as a premier travel destination in the region and the local participation.
Past champions include Peter Thomson, Greg Norman, Ian Woosnam, Bernhard Langer, Tom Watson, José María Olazábal, Padraig Harrington, Rory McIlroy, Ian Poulter, Miguel Angel Jiménez and Colin Montgomerie.
