July 10: Graeme McDowell, Danny Chia and Mardan Mamat lent their star support to Maybank Foundation and MERCY Malaysia by helping the community of Kelantan, who were affected by a devastating flood late last year.
Initiated by Maybank Foundation and MERCY Malaysia local ace Chia and Singaporean Mardan were invited by GlobalOne, the promoters for the 2015 Maybank Malaysian Open, to visit parts of Kelantan that was badly damaged by the floods.
This was the first time professional golfers visited the rural areas in Kelantan which was located about an hour 30 minutes from the town of Kota Bharu.
Clearly moved by his visit to Kelantan, Chia, a winner on the Asian Tour, recently hosted a charity golf game which raised RM35,000 to help MERCY Malaysia’s efforts rebuild areas of Kelantan affected by the floods.
McDowell, who headlined the 2015 Maybank Malaysian Open, also pledged RM50,000 for the same cause while an initiative at the exhibition marquee at the Maybank Malaysian Open in February raised more than RM150,000.
The Asian Tour and European Tour also donated RM25,000 each to help the people in Kelantan.
Through these donations, and supported by its largest partner Maybank Foundation, MERCY Malaysia are able to help rebuild homes for the victims of the floods and reconstruct the Masjid Al-Jauhar and newly built Surau Perkampungan MERCY Tualang (PMT) in Kuala Krai, Kelantan.
In observance of the Holy Month of Ramadan, Maybank Foundation, staff of Maybank Foundation together with regional Maybank staff and MERCY Malaysia hosted a Ramadan Iftar (breaking fast) at Masjid Al-Jauhar which was attended by Tan Sri Dato’ Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor, Chairman of Maybank and Maybank Foundation, senior officials from MERCY Malaysia as well as a number of villagers from Kuala Krai.
“One of the worst floods to have hit the state of Kelantan in December 2014 still leaves us saddened as it not only damaged homes and buildings, but also caused so much suffering for the entire community,” said Tan Sri Megat.
An organization with a mission to humanize financial services, Maybank was moved to render aid and support for the community through provision of relief supplies at that time.
We were also glad to have been able to collaborate with MERCY Malaysia for the construction of Masjid Al-Jauhar and the newly established Surau PMT to allow the community to carry out their religious prayers and ceremonies. We hope this Mosque and Surau will help bring joy and blessings to the community especially during this month of Ramadhan,’’ added Tan Sri Megat.
MERCY Malaysia added: “The community of Kelantan has suffered a huge loss from the floods and it was crucial to rehabilitate Masjid Al-Jauhar and construct a whole new Surau for Perkampungan MERCY Tualang. We truly are happy to be here today, to have completed these two community buildings just right before the holy month of Ramadhan whilst having an opportunity to break fast with the villagers. MERCY Malaysia extends its deepest appreciation to Maybank Foundation as this would all not have been possible without their kind support.”
