Ballantine's Championship Rd 1: What They Said

Read what leading contenders have to say following the opening round at this week's Ballantine's Championship.

I've been working really hard.  Probably more so over the last two months than I have done for quite a while, and then I'm glad it's starting to pay off. I’ve been working really hard on my putting, because that was something that was not up to scratch sort of late last year, and you know, that's starting to come around.  So I'm hitting the ball reasonably well, as well, so hopefully that can continue. That's a great start, but the tournament probably starts on Sunday really.  So I'll try to get myself into position to contend and then we'll go from there

I started the first round very early today and as you all know, the weather today was especially chilly and also it started to rain in the middle of the game. So until about the 13th hole, I think because of the weather, it was not that easy to play but after the suspension when we resumed the play, I think that for about five holes, the weather became warmer and I think that play got better. So overall, I did bad with one or two holes.  However, I think that overall, it was okay. I am quite used to the hot weather of Thailand and Malaysia and Singapore, and also the chilly weather sometimes of Korea and the United States. I know that as a golf player, I need to overcome those difficulties, including the weather conditions and prepare myself to perform well.            However, today, I would say that until the mid-part of my play, I think that it was not that easy.

I was really happy I came out of the block pretty good there on the front nine, five-under and played some really, really good golf.  Then we had the fog delay there, and I didn't really sleep very much last night, so I was a bit tired when we started playing again to be honest.
Started off with a bad three-putt and then only managed to make one birdie coming in.  So back nine, a bit disappointing, but overall, a really good start. I have been playing, not that badly, poorly this year, but my scoring has been so poor.  I'm maximising the highest score I could get each round it seems like.  So it's nice to get one nine going really good today, so hopefully I can carry that on to the weekend. I had a really tough year last year both on and off the golf course, so really struggled to keep my card at the end there.  I've done my preparation really good this year.  I've done all the practise and everything. So I guess I've been wanting it a little bit too much, so need to be patient to make it happen and did that well today.

It was good to put my name up right away, because I haven't played like this for more than a year.  That's pretty good.  I played pretty straight off the tee, putting was great.  I mean, putting was great last week, so I keep the feeling with me.  But yeah, it's good to play, five-under is a good score. I had a few changes in my swing, trying different coaches, talking about technique.  I'm back with my old coach from last week, which is working so I'm so happy.  Four rounds, I think I took the good position.  It was great to see that so early.
