Winning Edge - Striking fairway wood shots

  • SHARE
August 13: In this latest segment of Winning Edge, Asian Tour star Siddikur of Bangladesh reveals the secret to hitting crisp and consistent fairway wood shots which has become one of his trademark shots. The Bangladeshi trailblazer, who is the first man from his country to win on the Asian Tour, says there are only several simple steps to remember.
Step 1
For me, I have three ball positions for all the clubs that I use in the bag. For my driver to fairway woods and long irons, they are all in the same position which is to place the golf ball in between the centre and my left heel, hence the ball is placed more towards my left side.
Step 2
As I’m not a big-hitter, I ensure that every fairway wood shot that I strike is executed as perfectly as possible. It is important for me to keep my backswing compact as overswinging it may result in wayward shots or loss of control of the ball.
Step 3
For all my shots, I focus very hard on what I call the impact zone, which is the split second before my club strikes the ball. For me, I try to always ensure that my timing is always good and I strike the ball as crisply as possible to achieve a good shot.
Step 4 & 5
Due to the loft of the fairway wood, I make it a point to create a sweeping motion of the clubhead through impact of the golf ball. You basically want to sweep the club through the ball in a nice and smooth rhythm. And finally, always ensure that you have a good balance upon the completion of your golf swing.
