Sentosa, Singapore, June 13: Wu Ashun of China became the fourth Asian to win on the European Tour in the last three months when he triumphed at the Lyoness Open powered by Sporthilfe Cashback Card on Sunday.
Wu, who represented Team Asia at the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM earlier this year, closed with a three-under-par 69 for a winning total of 13-under-par 275 to become the only Chinese golfer to win multiple European Tour titles.
He joins countryman Li Haotong, Soomin Lee of Korea and Jeunghun Wang, who have all tasted victories on the European Tour this year.
"I am very happy right now. It was a very exciting finish and I still cannot believe it, but my playing partners were really good today and the scores were very close. My mindset was very good today and it was a great week overall,” said Wu, who began the day trailing by one.
“At the 10th and 11th holes, I just played two bad shots but I tried my best to make birdies after that and I did that. I just focused on the last putt and my caddie said it was an easy line and I made the putt for par,” added Wu.
Following his win, Wu overtook compatriot Liang Wen-chong and Li on the Olympic rankings and is currently the highest ranked Chinese on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) in 127th position. He and Li are now in the Olympic frame with Liang trailing closely.
Asian Tour Commissioner Kyi Hla Han said: “We are always thrilled to see Asian players winning outside of Asia. It has been an exciting time for us, with China’s Li Haotong and Korean duo Jeunghun Wang and Soomin Lee also winning on the European Tour over the last three months.
“Wu has cut his teeth on the Asian Tour when he turned professional in 2007. We are happy to see how much he has advanced in his career since. His victory has shown the rising standards of golf in Asia and we wish him all the best in his chase to qualify for the Olympics this August.”
