Perth, Western Australia, February 11: China’s golf star Wu Ashun is hoping a maiden visit to Western Australia will lead to a memorable outing at the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth next week.
The 31-year-old Wu has firmly established himself as one of the region’s top golfers following two victories on the European Tour, his latest success being the Lyoness Open powered by Sporthilfe Cashback Card in Austria last season, in addition to two other tournament wins in Japan.
The ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth will use a revolutionary format which sees golfers competing over 54 holes of strokeplay over the first three rounds, leading to the the top-24 players qualifying for Sunday’s final round which will use a unique six-hole matchplay knock-out system.

Wu, who cut his professional teeth on the Asian Tour for two seasons in 2008 and 2009, believes that next week’s A$1.75 million tournament at Lake Karrinyup Country Club has all the trappings of an exciting week of golf for fans and television viewers.
“It’s a new playing style which is going to be interesting. Maybe we should do more tournaments like this unlike playing 18 holes every day. I think it’s going to be a good tournament,” said Wu.
“I know that Sunday will be played over six-hole match-ups. Anything can happen over six holes unlike an 18-hole matchplay. If you have a good day and good feel on Sunday, maybe you’ll win the tournament. Matchplay is always fun for players. I like it very much,” added the Chinese, who was part of Team Asia which lost to Team Europe in the EurAsia Cup last year.
Although Wu has not visited Perth previously, his last visit to Australia was in November when he partnered Li Haotong to finish an impressive tied second at the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne.
“This will be my first time playing in Perth and I’m looking forward to being there. I’ve got a lot of good memories of Australia. I’ve played in the World Cup of Golf twice in Melbourne and on both occasions, the golf courses were really good. Conditions were always good for playing and I’m sure it will be the same in Perth,” said Wu.

About the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth
Headlined by World Number 10 Alex Noren, the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth is set to revolutionise tournament golf. To be played at Lake Karrinyup Country Club from 16-19 February, 2017 and tri-sanctioned by the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, Asian Tour and European Tour, the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth will combine 54 holes of traditional stroke play across the first three days with an exciting knockout match play format for the fourth and final round.
A regular cut will fall after 36 holes before the field is then further reduced to the top-24 players following 54 holes of regulation play, with any ties for 24th place being decided by a play-off. Those remaining players will then earn their places in the six-hole shootout.
Any matches tied after the six holes will be decided in a hole-by-hole play-off.
That player will then progress to the next round of the match play or, in the case of the final match, win the tournament.
The ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth is a revolutionary golf tournament designed to retain the traditions of the game whilst appealing to a broader audience.
