Jakarta, April 1: Asia’s first Major winner, Y.E. Yang has confirmed his participation at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters Presented by Enjoy Jakarta Golf which gets underway at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club from April 23-26.
Nicknamed the Tiger tamer following his 2009 PGA Championship win, in which he famously came from behind to defeat Tiger Woods, the Korean golfing legend will line up alongside former world number one Lee Westwood of England, Thomas Bjorn of Denmark, and the best players from the Asian Tour at Indonesia’s premier golf tournament.
At 43, Yang holds 12 professional wins which include two wins on the PGA TOUR, three from the European Tour, five from the Japan Golf Tour and two on the Asian Tour.
With his five year PGA TOUR exemption – granted after his PGA Championship win – now over, the Asian Tour honorary member, who first picked up a club at the age of 19, will be hoping to turn the corner at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters.
Speaking about his participation in the showpiece tournament, Yang said, “I’m very much looking forward to playing in the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters presented by Enjoy Jakarta Golf.
“I learnt my craft here in Asia so this feels like something of a home-coming for me, taking me back to my roots and to where it all began. I’ve heard some great things about the tournament so I look forward to providing the fans with some good entertainment out on course and hopefully giving Lee [Westwood] a run for his money!”
With a sizeable Korean population in the nation’s capital, there is sure to be no shortage of support for the man from Jeju-do.
Sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the PGA Tour of Indonesia, the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters Presented by Enjoy Jakarta Golf will feature 24 Indonesian golfers, 20 professionals from the PGA Tour of Indonesia and four of Indonesia’s top amateurs who will compete in the 150 player field over 72 holes of individual stroke play for their share of the tournament’s 750,000 prize purse.
