Biography

Darren was born to English parents in South Africa before the family moved to Australia when he was seven years old. Due to his father’s influence, he started playing golf at the age of six and by 16, he was a scratch handicapper. He represented New South Wales and won the inter-state series in 2000. Idolises Tiger Woods for his determination and Ernie Els for his fluid golf swing. Philosophy in golf is to “enjoy what you’re doing and to keep smiling” which were words of advice from his coach John Serhanm. Enjoys working out in the gym and hanging out on the beach with his family. His brother Johnny caddies for Darren on Tour. Says hypnotherapy and yoga helped him play better in 2011 and in the second half of 2012.

Career Highlights

  1. Darren secured his career breakthrough in style on the Asian Tour when he defeated Gaganjeet Bhullar in a thrilling play-off to win the 2009 Brunei Open
  2. He came from four shots back on the last day
  3. He endured a relatively quiet 2010 season where his best finish was tied 10th place at the Brunei Open
  4. In 2011, he finished in 27th position on the Order of Merit thanks largely to two top-10 finishes at the Indonesian Masters and Iskandar Johor Open
  5. He endured an uncharacteristic poor form early in the 2012 season where he missed eight out of 10 cuts
  6. He bounced back brilliantly in the second half of the year starting with a tied 14th result at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters and produced his first ever hole-in-one at a tournament in the third round of the Asia-Pacific Panasonic Open to finish 11th
  7. Cited help from his wife, who is a hypnotherapist for transforming his game
  8. Darren took some time to settle in on his rookie season on the Asian Tour before coming into prominence at the 2008 Hero Honda Indian Open
  9. He challenged eventual champion Liang Wen-chong for the title but was pipped by the Chinese star who birdied the last two holes for a one-shot triumph
  10. He earned his card at the third attempt at Qualifying School at the end of 2007
