His father was the greenskeeper at Royal Calcutta Golf Club which was where SSP picked up the game at the age of 10. The self-taught golfer is nicknamed "Chipputtsia" because of his superb short game. Used to sneak onto the golf course to play a few holes before being chased off the course by staff members and has now bought a house near the club.

Career Highlights

  1. Chawrasia successfully defended his title at the 2017 Hero Indian Open for his sixth Asian Tour victory. Became only the third player to make a successful defence of his National Open.
  2. He became a recipient of the prestigious Arjuna award in 2017.
  3. Won his fourth victory on the Asian Tour at the Hero Indian Open and claimed his first victory outside of India when he clinched the Resorts World Manila Masters in 2016. Also represented his country at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro that year.
  4. Defeated Rahil Gangjee and Mithun Perera with a birdie on the first play-off hole to win the 2014 Panasonic Open India.
  5. Won the Avantha Masters on home soil, an event co-sanctioned with Europe in 2011. Came close to winning his second Asian Tour title at the SAIL Open in Delhi when he finished fourth in 2010.
  6. Produced a memorable triumph with his breakthrough at the Indian Masters at Delhi Golf Club in 2008.
  7. Was denied victory at the Hero Indian Open when he lost on the first play-off hole to Anirban Lahiri in 2015 but thanks to three other top-10 results, he finished fourth on the Order of Merit that year and qualified for the 2016 EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM. Also represented Team Asia at the EurAsia Cup in 2018.
  8. Challenged compatriot Jyoti Randhawa for the Hero Honda Indian Open title before losing in a play-off that included Vijay Kumar in 2006. Emerged runner-up to Arjun Atwal at the 1999 Indian Open.
