Lee was born deaf but in 2010 he had an implant surgically put into his right ear to help him hear. Prior to that, he communicated by lip-reading through his father, Lee Kang-kun or brother Lee Sung-joo. Played baseball when he was young but quit the game due to problems in communicating with his teammates. Learned golf at the age of 16 through his father. Lee senior is his only coach and models his swing after Fred Couples and Ernie Els. Was initially registered on Tour as Lee Sung-man but opted to shorten his name to Lee Sung in 2006.
